Learn why the real time report in Google Analytics has valuable insights for your business.
If you’re like most people, the real time report in Google Analytics has as much excitement as a lava lamp. But I’m here to tell you that there is valuable information to be gathered, in addition to becoming ultra mesmerized by the floating blue bars floating up or down.
Right away, I can’t tell you how many times I have found this real time report to become very handy for 2 main reasons:
Campaign Testing & Troubleshooting
There is not a more satisfying feeling you can get once you launch a marketing campaign, by verifying that your tracking code is working and connected properly.
For campaign testing, this is the go-to report every time I send an email blast out (Especially if the list is a significant size). There are 2 things I can identify right away after sending an email out:
The tracking code is working properly
There is nothing more frustrating than to prepare, create and execute a thoroughly planned marketing campaign, then come to find out Google Analytics could not collect any data because you failed to verify or go through the simple steps of inserting the necessary tracking code.
How popular the offer is (This is easier to identify after sending emails out on a regular basis)
After sending out many emails, you begin to see a trend of how many visitors come to your website and at certain parts of the day. Also, if you are selling products, you tend to get a much higher response when there is a coupon or coupon code involved or during the holidays.
It is a lot of fun to see the response that comes from the many different offers that you launch from various campaigns.
The concept of comparing the real time report to a lava lamp goes like this:
A client of mine hasn’t posted anything on their Facebook page in a long time. I worked with them to create a spectacular page on a very popular topic.
I posted the information on their Facebook page around 4:00pm, just like the lava lamp, it took an hour or 2 for things to warm up and get going.
After the 2 hours, spurts of traffic would start coming in, just like a lava lamp would.
The topic became so hot; this 1 post received considerable results, equivalent in traffic compared to large email campaigns that I have launched for other clients!
So next time you come across this report, remember these 2 important insights that are always available.
